Looking After Your Nebulizer
By Ken Wilssens

You have just brought yourself one of the latest nebulizers such as the CompMist Compressor Nebulizer in order to help treat your asthma symptoms. But if you want to ensure that it remains in the best working condition possible you will need to learn how to look after it correctly.

Certainly the manufacturers of many of the nebulizers now available to purchase for home use will come with full instructions on how to use and look after yours. But below we provide you with some useful guidelines that you should remember when it comes to looking after your own nebulizer.

1. Cleaning

It is important that you regularly clean your nebulizer as if it gets dirty then it is likely to cause you an infection. So by having a good cleaning regime in place will help to ensure that not only does it stop from getting clogged up and will last longer, but it will also prevent it from building up dirt that can cause micro-organisms to grow which can enter the body and cause an infection.

Below we provide several steps to ensure that you clean your nebulizer properly. Each of these steps should be carried out after the equipment has been used.

a. Remove either the mouthpiece or mask as well as the t shaped part from the cup.

b. Now rinse either the mask or mouthpiece place the t shaped part under warm water for 30 seconds. Ensure that the water is running whilst you do this.

c. Next you need to take the eye dropper and place this under running water for 30 seconds.

It is important that wherever possible you can use either distilled or sterile water to carry out the above two steps. Plus you must not wash or rinse the tubing to which the t shape d part or the mask or mouthpiece will be attached to.

D. After rinsing each part above then you should ensure that all excess water has been removed through shaking them thoroughly before allowing them to try naturally just by laying them on a paper towel or a piece of clean cloth.

E. Now you will need to remove the tubing from the machine and this then should be stored with the other parts once they have dried in an air tight bag (say a zip lock one).

During these next set of guidelines we are looking at what you should do with your nebulizer when you finish with it at the end of each day.

Firstly you should follow the five steps that we have provided to you above but instead you should use mild washing up soap in order to clean all the parts and make sure that they are completely dry before you pack them away.

Finally now let us look at what you should do when it comes to cleaning your nebulizer once a week. Again you should was your nebulizer in mild washing up soap and after rinsing you should carry out the following. You will need to place them in a solution made up of 1 part distilled white vinegar together with 2 parts distilled water and then leave them in this solution for 30 minutes. Also remember to throw away the solution after each use.

When it also comes to looking after your nebulizer you should remember the pointers provided above and hopefully this will help to ensure that the machine carries on working effectively for a long time to come. Plus by doing this you are preventing the chances of you suffering from any form of infection if you were to leave your machine after each use and allow germs etc. to build up within the main components of the nebulizer. What is important to remember also is that nebulizers such as the CompMist Compressor Nebulizer and many others like it on the market are not cheap to purchase and therefore if you invest in one you will need to care for it to ensure that you get value for money from it.
