How does having asthma make you more susceptible to colds?

June 20th, 2010 by admin

I was just wondering how asthma does this. Does it supress the immune system? I was just wondering because this is the 2nd cold I’ve had this month and the 4th since October. Before my asthma became bad I hardly ever caught colds and I’ve always eaten healthily.

I found a website that has a lot of information on Asthma. Take a look at the information and there may be suggestions on what you can do to prevent the colds.

yes it does, i have it too (asthma) and my doc recommends i get the annual flu jab (i choose not to), its something to do with the excessive mucus built up in our already crappy bronchial tubes.

my wife is a toxicologist an is studying this exact topic i let you know her findings if you wait ooh about a year….

Asthma is a hyper-responsive disorder of the respiratory system lining.. in simple words your lung and air passage secrete a lot of mucous even at the smallest stimulus. It could be anything.. dust, cold, any allergen or stress too. The mucous clogs your passage and hence the difficulty in breathing. When it is cold the lining normally secrets more amount of mucous which could trigger an attack. Take care.. keep a bronchodialator ready at all times

Because asthma is a respiratory problem……….it manages to allow colds to be caught pretty easily. Actually, you may be having bronchial problems and NOT a cold………are you sure? Be sure to carry your meds with you at all times.

Asthma in no way increases the number of infections that a patient has. They are no more susceptible than non asthmatics. The average UK citizen gets 7 viral respiratory illnesses a year, that is an average of one every 7 weeks.

The difference is that asthmatics have a more severe and more long lasting response to having a viral illness, this makes them appear much more obvious.

Asthma interfers with sleep. If you are not getting enough REM sleep then your immune system can become comprimised which in turn leaves you more suceptable to viruses, etc.

Also because the respiratory system is hyper-responsive when exposed to viruses etc its response is to spasm and produce mucus which is a prime environment for the virus to live and profilate in.

if you catch a cold having asthma wil always make it worse.asthma makes your lungs subject to the cold viruses.

    Me also.
Since having asthma I seem to get constant colds, although I also have sinus problems. I do all the hand washing, healthy diet, excercise, early nights and take vitamins. Trust me I’ve tried everything. Smokey I would really be interested in your wife’s investigation, keep us posted!
