feline Asthma
July 17th, 2010 by admin
This is my 13 yr. old female cat named Stinky. After x-rays and ultra-sound the Vet diagnosed her with Asthma. Stinky passed on in January of 2007 from various other complications. I hope this video will benefit those of you who are searching for information about Feline asthma.
This video shows an example of labored breathing. When this video was taken, Stinky’s respiration rate was 112 breaths per minute. Needless to say she went to the Emergency Vet. Normal resting respiration should be be between 20-30.
The purpose of this video is to help other identify what abdominal or labored breathing looks like.

My kitty had labored breathing the other day-she was outside for the first time (in a carrier because my house was being sprayed for bugs) I wonder if that’s why… but she has had coughing in the past and what now I think could be feline asthma… I don’t know what to do-my dad won’t listen he thinks I worry too much I don’t know what to do!! She’s only 3 years old D:

I think this is an …
I think this is an age related disease; minimized if the cat is a normal weight, and
groomed regularly to reduce likelihood of hairballs.

I adopted my cat …
I adopted my cat earlier this year & discovered he does have asthma, but a very mild case. So meds are not warranted at this time. Just monitoring. One of the things the vet said really hits cats with asthma is the hairball situation. It blocks their breathing & irritates their diaphram more than for cats without asthma. Once I put him on food w/ hairball treatment & it got into his system, his asthma attacks & symptoms have dropped tremendously. Although he still snores like an old man.

My youngest cat …
My youngest cat Jack, whose not even a year old, had an asthma attack two days ago. My husband and I were terrified. I knew from my previous medical training what was going on and tried to help him out as best as possible, but nevertheless I felt so helpless. I’m afraid that the vet will only put him on meds and make me pay a fortune. I usually use natural methods so I’m a bit uneasy on giving my baby any type of meds. Can anyone help?

my cat’s about 5 …
my cat’s about 5 and I’m wondering if she has feline asthma. I’ve only had her for 2 months and I don’t think she’s had an attack yet. She does breathe a little funny though. About normal rate, 30 or so/min but the out is always exaggerated a little.
Your video helped me a lot to see an asthmatic cat that’s not having a coughing fit. I might get pet insurance for my girl since I found a cheapy policy that covers asthma.
Your kitty was a very pretty girl:) I’m sorry she’s gone.

I’m so sorry for …
I’m so sorry for your loss. I lost my 9-year old calico in July 2007 from asthma also. Stinky’s labored breathing looks just like my baby’s. Thanks for posting the video because so many people think it’s a furball. I had to take video into my vet’s office. I’ve always wondered if she could have lived with an albuterol inhaler if diagnosed sooner.

I am sorry you lost …
I am sorry you lost Stinky. We had a Siamese who had asthma his entire life and lived to be 13 years old. He seemed to get better when he started going outside. I always wondered if it were carpet related since my asthma acts up when I am near carpet, especially new carpet.

I am sorry you lost …
I am sorry you lost your sweet cat. I have had my male maine coon, Silverado, checked for everything and have no solutions. He has labored breathing, a lot of weight loss, seems worse on the exhale and just now I heard wheezing on the exhale, looked it up and found feline asthma. He never coughs though, no gagging or anything like that. Did Stinky cough too? Did she ever lose weight?
Thank you for this post.

My cat breathes …
My cat breathes rapidly like this whenever I’m petting her, sometimes while purring. I wonder if it’s just how she purrs, or if when she gets excited she has asthma problems. She’s only about 10 months old.
