Tracy Cat Asthma Treatment with Aerokat

July 20th, 2010 by admin

This is our asthmatic cat Tracy getting one of her two daily treatments of Flovent with an aerokat. She gets Two puffs Flovent 220mcg, twice daily and albuterol if needed. She’s doing really well since starting the flovent and she actually enjoys getting her treatment, face washings and of course… a treat.

My kitty Shadow heard this while I was playing it, and came over to check it out (twice now, just to see if I got the same response). He likes your voice. We start on the Aerokat tomorrow, so wish me luck. He’s 16! Guess I’ll have to play this while i give it to him!

@pepobimbo when she is bad i spray the steroids into the aerokat (i am using a baby tube from the chemist with an aerokat mask , much cheaper) tube with the mask removed then i hold it close to her face and gently blow from the other end , its not ideal but it does get some of the vapours into her system , it just wastes more than she breaths in. Hope this helps , good luck.

@pepobimbo , hi , my cat is on steroids that we put in her food. we recently moved house and this has helped her condition also we got rid of carpets and any other dust magnets. our vet was able to tell us what allergies our cat had and we were able to minimise her contact with these substances , one was tommy grass and another was storage mites.

Tracy sure sounds like a little baby kitten, but she’s quite clever. She’s so cute!

@nobberING Hi nobber, i’m having the same problem here, my cat do not want accept the mask. Did you find a solution? How?
And, thanks for the video Carmen. I hope you little Tracy get better.

    Hi R. I kinda got …
Hi R. I kinda got lucky with Tracy. She accepted the mask from day one without a fight, so I don’t have any genius ideas for you to get your cat to allow you to put the mask on her. The small mask size is fine as long as it covers your cats entire nostril area. Tracy uses the small mask. more helpful info can be found on yahoo groups. Go to Yahoo Groups & search for “Feline Asthma inhaled medication” & you will find groups with great info to help you help your kitty!

    hi
can i please ask how you trained your cats to accept the mask? my cat is quite timid and is having none of it , i have tried wrapping her in a towel and she just fights it off through wriggling and shaking her head.
also , my cat is quite small so i got the small mask size , is this small mask just for kittens or will it fit small cats as well?

    thanks

    R.

    Thanks. You should …
Thanks. You should really have your cat assesed by a vet knowledgable in asthma. Not all cases are clear cut and you’ll want someone who knows what they are looking for assessing her. If she does have asthma, as long as you treat her and don’t let the condition worsen she will live a long happy life. :o )

    I’m planning on …
I’m planning on getting my cat to a vet and I’m really worried that she’s got asthma. She had a virus and a bad hairball in March that basically silenced her meows (ok now) but in April I noticed soft cough about twice a week, 6-10 coughs through her mouth and nose. It’s not wet and it’s not breathless, it’s just quiet. Only starting this week she started to lick her lips alot. This sound like asthma? I’m worried it will shorten her life (8 years old).

    I know. It’s all …
I know. It’s all very confusing and scary at first. The meds your talking about sound like a nebulizer. Is that right? Asthma doesn’t always present with coughing. Just because your cat doesn’t cough doesn’t mean that it’s not asthma. If you go to that group I recommended above they will talk you through all of this and give you some invaluable advice. You really need the support of others who have done this and I know you can get a lot of info there to help you with your cat.

    No sorry, I must …
No sorry, I must have confused you. The equipment I have is for humans when they are hospitalised with asma and it clips onto the travel case. I have stopped it because it is totally freaking Rosie out. It’s an infusion of drugs that get steamed into the cage. However, after watching the videos I really don’t think she has asma as she doesn’t cough – she just needs to catch her breath – I am soooooo confused!

    You’re welcome. I …
You’re welcome. I made this video because I was so greatful to others who had made one. It really helped me understand how to treat her witht he inhaler/flovent and made me more confident that I could do this and help her. I hope to see you and your kitty video demonstrating for others too if this is the route you take!

    Puffing the flovent …
Puffing the flovent into a carrier will not work at all. I’m shocked a vet told you this was acceptable. I’d be looking for another vet asap. The Flovent must be given directly into the airway. Try wrapping your kitty up in a kitty burrito w/ a towel & giving the flovent like that. more helpful info can be found on yahoo groups. Go to Yahoo Groups & search for “Feline Asthma inhaled medication” & you will find groups with great info to help you help your kitty!

My vet has told me to use an inhalator attached to her travel cage. This totally freaks my cat out. Can anyone help me – she would not tolerate having anything attached to her mouth – any medicines that can be given orally or in her food for asma? HELP PLEASE

Thank you so much for this video. I think my cat may have asthma and did not know what kind of treatment he would need.

    I hope Raskal takes …
I hope Raskal takes to the inhaler as easily as Tracy did! Tracy *loves* medicine time. These days she races me to the chair! Just make sure to make it a positive experience and offer love, pets and treats everytime! Don’t be discouraged if it doesn’t go as smoothly as Miss Tracy demonstrates it to be. Not all cats appreciate the Aerokat on thier face. lol. Good luck! Let me know how it goes!

    It’s definitely not …
It’s definitely not the least expensive treatment out there, but of all the asthma treatment options available it has the least side affects to the cat so it’s definitely the safest long term option. Flovent varies in cost of where you get it and the strength that your cat will need. Tracys’s inhaler costs about fifty per month and she’s on the highest dosage advised, 880mcg per day. Join Yahoo Groups for advice on where to purchase Flovent at the best price. Good Luck. I hope your kitty is ok.

hello, my cat may be asthmatic (have to do the tests) I am informed, and wanted to know if the treatment is very expensive with aerokat? thanks;)

    Wow, Tracy is quite …
Wow, Tracy is quite the trooper! I have a 3 year old male cat, Raskal, who was recently diagnosed with feline asthma. We have him on 10mg daily of prednisolone pills as well as a bronchodilator pill. I have ordered an aerokat and am waiting for the delivery of the inhalants so I can start gradually switching him onto those.

Thanks for the video, gives me an idea of how to approach the inhaled medicine treatment.
