Lung cancer and mesothelioma are as different from each other as chalk and cheese. Lung cancer is due to a large number of reasons and smoking is one of them. But mesothelioma lung cancer is caused totally by being exposed to asbestos particles. The disease covers the protective layer of the pleural hole, the mesothelium. Unfortunately, the disease has a long gestation period and symptoms come up only after the infection spreads all over. This results in many deaths that could have been avoided.
Due to its rare nature, many cancer centers and doctors have neither the required infrastructure nor the relevant information to treat mesothelioma. As per statistics, only fewer than three thousand mesothelioma cases are diagnosed every year in the United States and the total number around the world is also very less. The cancer, which is considered an occupational risk as most of the affected are those who worked either in asbestos mines or factories.
It takes many years for the asbestos particles settled in the mesothelium to destroy the lining to life-threatening levels. But the virtual inexistence of any symptoms at the initial stages results in lack of timely checkups and cancer detection. The ultimate result is death.
If detected and treated at the initial stages itself, mesothelioma lung cancer can be cured. But most cases of this cancer are detected when severe symptoms start showing up after many decades of asbestos infection. Doctors classify the cancer into four levels depending on how far the infection has spread. The initial stage, that is level one, can be treated through surgery. The next level require much more aggressive treatments like surgery combined with medicines and radiation therapy. Medicated treatment, medically called chemotherapy, helps prevent the spread and recurrence of cancerous growth, but has several painful side effects. Radiotherapy uses high energy or particle beams to kill off the harmful cells.
The subsequent levels, the third and 4th stages, are life threatening and the prognosis of awfully desolate in such cases. But doctors try and assuage agony and help the dying patient to guide a more comfortable life by turning to palliative cures. Mesothelioma lung cancer patients can claim for monetary compensation too from those in charge of it. The amounts, that might be substantial in some cases, help cover all treatment costs and help the patient and his folks members to survive unpleasant economic state at home.
